The camp gate (Guard house) The camp gate separated the prisoners' area from that of the SS. At the camp gate was a large wooden house. All the prisoners who left the camp were counted there, both in the morning and in the evening. Prisoners who did not make it to the evening had to be taken back to the camp and were counted. The number of prisoners who left in the morning had to be the same as the number of prisoners who returned in the evening. When the prisoners came past the wooden house, everyone had to greet at the same moment. On the sign “Mützen ab!” (“Take off the hat”!), everybody took off their hats and slapped them against their thighs. One of the gate posts at the camp gate bore the well-known motto “Arbeit macht frei” (“Work brings freedom”). This motto indicates the so-called educational objective of a concentration camp. In reality however, the prisoners were exploited, tortured and in many cases worked to death. Behind the camp gate was the roll call ground. vertaling :Joke Lefevere |
