In May 1943, Max Koegel, member of the NSDAP since 1932, became the last camp commander, after he won his spurs by leading other concentration camps. In addition, he was also the head of all SS-units who guarded and managed the main camp and the subcamps. By 1945, the “SS-Todenkopf-Sturmbanns Flossenbürg” had 4,000 male and 500 female members. All newcomers had to receive training in the main camp in order to gain more knowledge about guarding skills. Koegel was in charge of the death march to Straubing. As the Flossenbürg camp was liberated, Koegel went into hiding but could be tracked and arrested in 1946. At the moment of his arrest, it turned out that he had adopted the identity of a former prisoner! Koegel hanged himself in prison. | |||||||||
